Course description

Students pursuing a major in World-building and Visual Effects will develop expertise in modeling, texturing, and lighting for environments; design and implement visual effects; and/or create immersive worlds through layout illustrations, environmental designs, and background art.

Those majoring in Interactive Media and Games will have the chance to craft remarkable 2D games and/or develop immersive 3D game environments, visual effects, and gameplay mechanics.

Students focusing on Story and Character will refine their drawing skills, concept art, coloring, painting, and character design; and/or animate characters and narratives in both 2D and 3D formats.

The program establishes a comprehensive foundation in core competencies, enabling you to conceptualize, plan, and produce animation either independently or as part of a studio team. Following this, you will delve deeper into your selected discipline, cultivating the academic, creative, and technical skills that will set you apart in the industry. This vocational degree program is designed to adapt to the evolving needs of the industry, equipping you with the technical skills, expertise, and creative acumen required to create work that is engaging, captivating, and inspiring.

Entry requirements

Candidates must possess NCEA University Entrance (UE) or equivalent qualifications such as CIE/IB grades, ideally including at least 24 NCEA credits at Level 3 in practical art, design, or technology subjects, or an equivalent credential from an international secondary school or tertiary institution, in addition to a portfolio.

Alternatively, successful completion of Yoobee’s Diploma in Animation Level 5 is acceptable.

International students must be at least 18 years old.

Applications that speak English as a second language must have, within the preceding two years, achieved or surpassed at least one of the following English proficiency outcomes:

IELTS (Academic) Test: Score of 6, with no band score lower than 5.5

TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT): Score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE)

TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT): Score of 79, or higher (with a writing score of 18)

University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations: FCE or CAE with a score of 52, or higher

NZCEL: Level 4, with the Academic endorsement
