Bachelor of Applied Science

Sport and Exercise Science is designed for those aiming to demonstrate mastery in the field. It prepares you for doctoral study, academic careers, or leadership roles in sport and exercise, with options to complete the degree through research or practice.

Course description

This highly-regarded degree combines practical experience with problem-based learning, developing your skills in sport, exercise, and health, alongside communication, academic writing, and project management. You’ll complete community projects and gain real-world industry experience to deepen your expertise.

In the first year, courses cover Bioscience, Sport, Exercise, and Health, plus your first community project. The second year allows specialization in Advanced Sport, Exercise, Health, or Massage, with a second community project. The third year focuses on a major final community project.

For massage and health specialities, you’ll begin with the New Zealand Diploma in Wellness and Relaxation Massage, then progress into the second year of the programme, meeting requirements for registration with Massage New Zealand (MNZ) as a rehabilitation massage therapist.

Entry requirements

Academic requirement:

-NCEA Level 3 including 14 credits at Level 3 or above in three
-NZQA-approved entrance subjects and 10 Literacy credits at Level 2 or above (5 reading, 5 writing) and 10 Numeracy credits at Level 1 or above, or equivalent, or Level 4 qualification on
NQF equalling at least 60 credits completed in one year, or
-successful completion of university courses/units equalling at least 50% of a first-year student workload completed in one year, or equivalent professional experience.

English Language requirement:

-IELTS 6.0 (no band score lower than 5.5) from one test completed in the last two years, or equivalent.
