Explore the techniques for performing, promoting, and producing the music of tomorrow, with insights from leading New Zealand artists and industry professionals, in the Bachelor of Commercial Music.

Course description

Students will engage in critical thinking regarding the music industry and determine their desired positioning within it. They will collaborate on a diverse array of music events and experiences while becoming adept with industry-standard production tools. The Commercial Music curriculum places a significant focus on popular music genres, as well as emerging technologies and methodologies. Students will examine the impact of streaming and digital media on the music industry and investigate ways to innovate and function beyond conventional business models.

In addition to the core courses within their major, students will collaborate with peers from various disciplines to acquire skills in music content creation, online media, event organization, and production, as well as the making and releasing of recordings. The essential content of this qualification encompasses new musicology, the political economy of music, and music philosophy.

Entry requirements

Students must register for an audition. Students should apply for entry to this degree before registering for audition and will be assessed for selection into the qualification.

Students may also be required to demonstrate proficiency in English. Undergraduate English Language requirements and acceptable evidence:

Academic IELTS 6.0 overall and minimum 5.5 in each band
TOEFL iBT Overall score 80, minimum 19 in Writing
Cambridge English Qualification B2 First, or B2 First for schools, or C1 Advanced, or
C2 Proficiency with a score of 169. No less than 162 in each skill.
NZ Certificate in English Language Level 4 (Academic)
Pearson Test of English (PTE) 50 overall and minimum 42 in each communicative skills
Language Certificate (Academic) 65 overall with a minimum 60 in each band
LanguageCert International ESOL C1 Expert IESOL (LRWS) with PASS and no less than Pass in each skill
Duolingo English Test 105 overall and minimum 95 in each band
