The Bachelor of Contemporary Music presents an industry-oriented educational framework, designed to ready students for a career in the contemporary music sector.

Course description

The Bachelor of Contemporary Music is structured to provide an industry-oriented education that prepares students for a professional journey in contemporary music. The program covers a diverse array of practical competencies, including performance, composition, arranging, and songwriting, while also familiarizing students with industry-standard recording and production software. In addition to these practical skills, students receive comprehensive training through courses in music and audio industry studies, music education, tour planning, and concert promotion. They also have the advantage of utilizing top-tier recording equipment and studios at SIT Sound, in partnership with audio production students.

Furthermore, SIT offers the possibility for students to earn a double degree in the Bachelor of Audio Production and Bachelor of Contemporary Music, which can be completed in four years of full-time study. Graduates from this combined program will be equipped as versatile musicians and sound engineers, adept in high-quality studio recording and live sound, and prepared to pursue careers as performers, composers, or specialized instrumental instructors.

Career Prospects

Students will be equipped with skills to embark on a career as a performer, songwriter, composer for film, television, and theatre, and music arranger. Students will also have the necessary skills for a career as a music educator or music writer, and also pursue further study in music therapy, music education, and music research.

The qualification aims to produce graduates who have a wide range of professional skills and are industry-ready.

Entry requirements

Overseas qualification equivalent to university entrance and/or applicants with evidence of relevant prior learning and work experience.

All applicants must provide a high quality CD or DVD showcasing an audition performance. Telephone/Skype interviews may be required.

Non-native English speakers must provide proof of proficiency through one of the following:

IELTS Test – Academic score of 6.0 with no band score lower than 5.5
Pearson Test of English – PTE (Academic) score of 50 with no band score lower than 42
