Course description

In the programme, students will learn to use x-rays and advanced imaging technologies such as CT, MRI, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, and mammography to capture diagnostic images that assist in patient care and treatment.

Alongside technical training, you’ll develop strong communication and interpersonal skills to support patients with empathy and professionalism. This degree blends theory with extensive clinical practice to prepare you for the high standards of the medical imaging profession and a smooth transition into your role as a qualified Medical Radiation Technologist.

Throughout your studies, you’ll complete around 60 weeks of clinical placement at various healthcare facilities across New Zealand.

Occupational Registration

Certain occupations require registration by law in New Zealand. This programme leads to registration with Medical Radiation Technologists Board.

Career Prospects

The graduates can register with the Medical Radiation Technologists Board and practise as a Medical Radiation Technologist (MRT) in public or private hospitals and healthcare facilities across New Zealand.

After gaining one year of professional experience in New Zealand, graduates are also eligible to work as MRTs in the United Kingdom and Australia.

Entry requirements

Academic requirements:

-University Entrance as specified by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA)

Or New Zealand Certificate in Study and Employment Pathways (Level 4) Pre Health Pathway or equivalent

-If you have undertaken examinations other than NCEA (e.g. International Baccalaureate, Cambridge Examination), Ara will assess your qualification for academic entry equivalency.

If English is not the first language, students must provide a result from a test or qualification on the acceptable alternatives.
