The degree prepares you for professional social work practice in New Zealand, with a strong focus on biculturalism and anti-oppressive approaches. You’ll develop skills in professionalism, research, critical thinking, and ethical decision-making, progressing to advanced levels through integrated practice courses each year. From the second year onward, you’ll spend significant time in social work agencies gaining real-world experience. Field placements may occur outside Christchurch, so a full driver’s licence is recommended. The programme also includes two compulsory overnight marae visits.
By graduation, you’ll have the professional values and competencies required for provisional registration with the Social Workers Registration Board. Māori, Pacific, migrant, refugee, male, and disabled applicants are especially encouraged to apply.
