Bachelor of Social Work

Study Social Work to develop the skills to support and empower individuals experiencing difficult situations and life challenges.

Course description

The degree prepares you for professional social work practice in New Zealand, with a strong focus on biculturalism and anti-oppressive approaches. You’ll develop skills in professionalism, research, critical thinking, and ethical decision-making, progressing to advanced levels through integrated practice courses each year. From the second year onward, you’ll spend significant time in social work agencies gaining real-world experience. Field placements may occur outside Christchurch, so a full driver’s licence is recommended. The programme also includes two compulsory overnight marae visits.

By graduation, you’ll have the professional values and competencies required for provisional registration with the Social Workers Registration Board. Māori, Pacific, migrant, refugee, male, and disabled applicants are especially encouraged to apply.

Occupational Registration

Certain occupations require registration by law in New Zealand. This programme leads to registration with Social Worker registration board.

Career Prospects

Graduates will be prepared to work in a wide range of social work settings, including statutory organisations such as Child, Youth and Family or the Probation and Prison Service, as well as faith-based agencies, community organisations, and health or hospital services.

Entry requirements

Academic requirements:

-University Entrance as specified by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA)

OR NZ2992 New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 4) or equivalent

OR If you have undertaken examinations other than NCEA (e.g. International Baccalaureate, Cambridge Examination), Ara will assess your application for academic entry equivalency.

OR New Zealand Certificate in Study and Employment Pathways (Level 4) Open Pathway or equivalent.

-Due to Covid-19 disruption, if you studied and achieved NCEA Level 3 during 2020, you only need 12 credits per Level 3 subject (i.e. total of 36 credits). Literacy and Numeracy requirements remain the same

English requirements:

-If English is not the first language, students must provide a result from a test or qualification on the acceptable alternatives.
