Course description

This Diploma in Diversional and Recreational Therapy (Work-integrated) (Level 5) program, accredited by NZQA, is tailored for individuals currently employed or aspiring to work in the field of diversional and recreational therapy, aiming for career progression or professional development. The health and wellbeing sector in New Zealand stands to gain from graduates equipped with expertise in diversional and recreational therapy, as well as care planning to enhance health and wellbeing outcomes for clients and their families. Aged care facilities and community organizations will benefit from graduates who have engaged in studies that combine theoretical knowledge with practical experience in workplace environments.

Graduates of this program will possess the ability to work autonomously, developing and adjusting dementia care strategies while delivering culturally sensitive and responsive care within diversional and recreational contexts.

Education pathways:

This programme may lead to higher-level programmes including bachelor’s degrees in related subjects, including nursing, physiotherapy, occupational health and allied health professions. Graduates may also be able to apply for cross-credit or advanced standing into Healthcare related bachelor programmes.

Entry requirements

-All international candidates must be at least 18 years old by the commencement of the semester in which their chosen program is available.
-International students are required to have obtained an IELTS Academic score of 5.5 within two years prior to enrollment, with no individual band score lower than 5, or an equivalent score as outlined in the NZQA’s Table of Internationally Recognised English Language Proficiency Outcomes for International Students.
-Alternatively, they may present evidence of fulfilling other criteria specified in Rules 18.2 to 18.4 of the NZQF Programme Approval and Accreditation Rules 2018.
-Furthermore, all applicants must demonstrate achievement equivalent to a qualification at Level 4 or higher on the NZQF, with healthcare sector qualifications or experience substantiated by academic transcripts or work placement documentation.
-Candidates must also be physically capable of performing the job and show a willingness to work with elderly individuals.
-Attendance at an interview is mandatory for all applicants, as it will assess their academic potential, maturity, and readiness to pursue studies at Level 5 on the NZQF.
-Additionally, evidence of work placement activities must be provided through references, and a clean criminal record check is required, with an initial verification from the applicant’s last country of residence.
