Course description

In the MAppLing program, you will delve into a diverse array of topics in Applied Linguistics, such as conducting research on the use, learning, and teaching of second and additional languages.

Subjects covered include the influence of language on identity, the organization of language knowledge in the lexicon, the impact of theoretical language acquisition models on teaching methods, and the evaluation of proficiency in second or additional languages.

The MAppLing program continues a tradition of over sixty years of graduate education in TESOL and Applied Linguistics at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.

In the MAppLing program, you will acquire advanced skills that can be applied to various fields, including language testing, language assessment, and language education policy and planning.

For those interested in an academic career, this program also equips you for entry into PhD programs both in New Zealand and internationally. Many PhD programs require a Master’s thesis or dissertation, which you can complete as part of your MAppLing studies.

Entry requirements

Bachelor’s degree with at least a B average in a relevant subject and two years of related professional experience.

You may also be required to demonstrate your proficiency in English.
– IELTS (Academic):Minimum overall score of 6.5, with no sub-score below 6.0
– TOEFL (Internet-based test): Minimum score of 90, with at least 20 in writing
– Pearson Test of English: Minimum score of 58, with a ‘Communicative’ score of no less than 50
– EAP:Minimum final scores of 4, 4, 5, 5
– Cambridge English Qualifications: C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency with a score of 176 or higher, with each skill score no less than 169
– New Zealand Certificates in English Language (NZCEL): Level 5 (Academic)
– NZAPA:English New Zealand Accredited Pathway Assessment Level 3, with no skill lower than Level 2
