Statisticians are highly sought after due to the vast and increasing amounts of data generated today, necessitating skilled professionals who can analyze and interpret this information.
Our Master of Applied Statistics (MAppStat) program is designed to equip you with advanced statistical techniques and provide insight into the diverse roles of professional statisticians and consultants.
Your program will include both university coursework and practical field training. The MAppStat has a strong professional focus, featuring a consultancy project and a work experience practicum, offering a distinctive experience among international applied statistics programs.
You will collaborate with fellow students in consulting roles, working with real clients such as clinicians or academics. This experience will teach you how to discuss technical issues in accessible terms, deliver oral presentations, and write comprehensive reports.
During your practicum, you will gain valuable professional experience with a host organization, such as the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, Statistics New Zealand, NIWA, or data science companies like Dot Loves Data or Harmonic Analytics. You will be placed in an environment that aligns with your career goals.
To enroll in the MAppStat, you should have a degree in Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field, with appropriate academic background with an average grade of B+ or better.
