Develop and hone your expertise under the mentorship of world-class researchers and practitioners, while exploring a wide array of theoretical perspectives and their practical applications in educational, community, and workplace settings. This program emphasizes a bicultural approach tailored to New Zealand’s communities, yet also prepares you for work in multicultural and international contexts.

The Wellington Faculty of Education provides a research-based master’s program and a practice-based Postgraduate Diploma that leads to registration as an educational psychologist. Completion of the master’s degree is required before applying for the limited-entry Diploma program. The program includes supervised practice as an intern psychologist, culminating in eligibility for registration as a Registered Educational Psychologist with the New Zealand Psychologists Board.

Admission to the PGDipEdPP requires successful completion of 45 points of 200- or 300-level Psychology courses with at least a B grade. For more information, please refer to the requirements page.

Career Prospects

Graduates of MEdPsych programs may pursue careers as teachers, pursue PhD studies, or work in educational and health agencies requiring specialized educational psychology expertise. Opportunities include roles in early intervention services, mental health services, or NGOs supporting families.

Registered educational psychologists may focus on research or develop and implement programs to enhance youth learning. They can work in schools, for government bodies like the Ministry of Education, or for organizations such as Explore or IDEA Services. Private practice is also an option, serving both public and private sectors.

Entry requirements

To be considered for acceptance into the program, applicants must hold
– a bachelor’s degree with a major in Education, Psychology, Education and Psychology, or an approved teacher education degree. They should have achieved an average grade of B or above for all coursework completed in the final year of their undergraduate program.
– Approval from the Associate Dean (Academic) of the Wellington Faculty of Education is required to proceed with the proposed course of study.

EL requirement (any one of the following)
– IELTS (Academic): Minimum overall score of 6.5, with no sub-score below 6.0
– TOEFL (Internet-based test): Minimum score of 90, with at least 20 in writing
– Pearson Test of English: Minimum score of 58, with a ‘Communicative’ score of no less than 50
– EAP: Minimum final scores of 4, 4, 5, 5
– Cambridge English Qualifications: C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency with a score of 176 or higher, with each skill score no less than 169
– New Zealand Certificates in English Language (NZCEL): Level 5 (Academic)
– NZAPA: English New Zealand Accredited Pathway Assessment Level 3, with no skill lower than Level 2
