Course description

Fundamentally, all environmental challenges have deep social roots. Social science methodologies provide the tools to uncover these underlying causes and devise effective solutions to complex environmental issues.

Our Environmental Studies program integrates environmental psychology, science and technology studies, critical theory, Mātauranga Māori, policy analysis, and environmental ethics. This interdisciplinary approach equips you with the knowledge and skills necessary to drive positive change.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Studies consists of one year of intensive coursework. The Master’s program builds upon this foundation with additional coursework followed by a substantial year-long research project. Our interactive courses are designed to enhance your understanding of the social dimensions inherent in environmental problems.

Throughout your studies, you will work closely with our esteemed faculty to develop essential skills in information analysis, clear communication, and ethical research practices within communities. You will also join a dynamic community of scholars and students dedicated to achieving shared goals and fostering collective success.

Opportunities also exist in non-governmental organizations (NGOs), corporations, iwi organizations, as environmental consultants, or as social entrepreneurs.

Entry requirements

– A bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject with a B+ average, or extensive practical experience
– To be accepted by the programme director as capable of proceeding with the proposed course of study

EL requirement (any one of the following)
– IELTS (Academic): Minimum overall score of 6.5, with no sub-score below 6.0
– TOEFL (Internet-based test): Minimum score of 90, with at least 20 in writing
– Pearson Test of English: Minimum score of 58, with a ‘Communicative’ score of no less than 50
– EAP: Minimum final scores of 4, 4, 5, 5
– Cambridge English Qualifications: C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency with a score of 176 or higher, with each skill score no less than 169
– New Zealand Certificates in English Language (NZCEL): Level 5 (Academic)
– NZAPA: English New Zealand Accredited Pathway Assessment Level 3, with no skill lower than Level 2
