Course description

Refine your leadership, collaborative, creative, and business skills as a practicing artist in an intensive 12-month program. Our Master of Fine Arts (Creative Practice) is an industry-focused, practical degree designed to help you build new contacts and networks in Wellington’s creative industries.

Located in the capital city, you will study at the University’s Kelburn campus. Film or Music/Sound students will benefit from our specially refitted facilities at the Miramar Creative Centre.

The MFA(CP) includes a creative project where you’ll be mentored to complete work that showcases your abilities and encourages you to push boundaries in your field. Additionally, you’ll gain valuable work experience and industry connections through an internship with an arts organization.

Enhance your potential as a creative leader by developing professional mastery, craft, and practical skills, and learn to drive ambitious creative projects. The program offers a broad base of knowledge, including a course in arts management and marketing to build essential business skills. Music/Sound or Theatre students may also take a complementary course from another fine arts discipline to broaden their expertise.

Entry requirements

– A Bachelor’s degree with a B range average
– To have met the prerequisites for the subject you wish to study
– To be accepted by the programme coordinator as capable of proceeding with the proposed course of study

EL requirement (any one of the following)
– IELTS (Academic): Minimum overall score of 6.5, with no sub-score below 6.0
– TOEFL (Internet-based test): Minimum score of 90, with at least 20 in writing
– Pearson Test of English: Minimum score of 58, with a ‘Communicative’ score of no less than 50
– EAP: Minimum final scores of 4, 4, 5, 5
– Cambridge English Qualifications: C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency with a score of 176 or higher, with each skill score no less than 169
– New Zealand Certificates in English Language (NZCEL): Level 5 (Academic)
– NZAPA: English New Zealand Accredited Pathway Assessment Level 3, with no skill lower than Level 2
