Master of Medical Science (MMedSc)

The MMedSc degree is a research-focused program that can be completed in one year of full-time study (or part-time equivalent), involving a supervised investigation in a specific area of medical science.

Course description

To apply for the Master of Medical Science (MMedSc) degree, candidates must:

– Hold a Bachelor of Medical Science with Honours (BMedSc(Hons)), Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB), or an equivalent qualification approved by the Otago Medical School Academic Board (e.g., MBBS).
– Be eligible for university study in New Zealand, which may require appropriate visa status (see the International Office page for details).

The MMedSc is a one-year research degree, either full-time or part-time, involving supervised research in a medical science field. This program typically involves one to two years of full-time study, with exceptions allowed only by the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Health Sciences).

Applicants should:

1. Verify eligibility with the Manager of the Otago Medical School.
2. Consult a department within the Otago Medical School (Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, or School of Biomedical Sciences) to discuss their research proposal and secure supervision.
3. Proceed to the online application process if the department can support and supervise the research.

The application must include:

– Background: A brief description of the study’s purpose.
– Proposed Methods: Details on methodological approaches, including patient recruitment, sample collection, and types of analyses.
– Analysis of Results: Methods for analyzing and summarizing data.

– Possess alternative qualifications or experience deemed acceptable by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health Sciences).
