This degree program is offered in collaboration with New Zealand’s premier weather forecasting organization, MetService. You will explore topics including cloud physics, satellites, climatology, and numerical weather prediction, gaining specialized knowledge in mid-latitude weather systems with a focus on New Zealand and the Tasman Sea region.

As part of the program, you will undertake a practical project based on current research topics at MetService, enhancing your scientific rigor, critical thinking abilities, and expertise in independent research.

Our Master of Meteorology program stands out as one of the few graduate-level meteorology programs in the Southern Hemisphere. Taught by the University’s atmospheric science experts and leading practitioners from MetService, your qualification will be globally recognized, meeting the World Meteorological Organization’s Basic Instruction Package for Meteorologists (BIP-M). This accreditation qualifies you to work as a meteorologist anywhere worldwide.

Entry requirements

– A bachelor’s degree in Geophysics, Mathematics, Physics, or another relevant subject
– to be accepted by the head of the School of Geography, Environment, and Earth Sciences as capable of proceeding with the proposed course of study.

EL requirement (any one of the following)
– IELTS (Academic): Minimum overall score of 6.5, with no sub-score below 6.0
– TOEFL (Internet-based test): Minimum score of 90, with at least 20 in writing
– Pearson Test of English: Minimum score of 58, with a ‘Communicative’ score of no less than 50
– EAP: Minimum final scores of 4, 4, 5, 5
– Cambridge English Qualifications: C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency with a score of 176 or higher, with each skill score no less than 169
– New Zealand Certificates in English Language (NZCEL): Level 5 (Academic)
– NZAPA: English New Zealand Accredited Pathway Assessment Level 3, with no skill lower than Level 2
