Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

Open up international career possibilities with a TESOL qualification. The MTESOL degree at The University of Waikato offers specialized pathways for both novice and seasoned educators.

Course description

In this program, you will acquire the expertise necessary to teach English to speakers of other languages through one of two study pathways: pre-service or in-service.

You can select a teaching practice paper that includes classroom experience, peer micro-teaching, and formal teaching with learners. Additionally, you will take courses in applied linguistics, second language acquisition, and education theory. We offer a variety of electives to support the diverse career paths our graduates may follow.

Students will engage in TESOL-related research, completing both research methods and research report papers. Throughout the program, you will benefit from support in English language development, academic literacies, and study skills. You’ll also have opportunities to participate in events and symposia that foster reflection, dialogue, and both personal and professional growth.

TESOL studies are available through the 60-point Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert(TESOL)) or the 120-point Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip(TESOL)).

This programme will not lead to registration as a teacher in New Zealand
