Students investigate a diverse array of subjects within Applied Linguistics, which encompasses conducting research on matters pertaining to the use, acquisition, and instruction of second and additional languages. Areas of focus include the influence of language on identity, the organization of language knowledge within the lexicon, the ways in which theoretical perspectives on language acquisition shape teaching methodologies, and the evaluation of proficiency in a second or additional language. The Applied Linguistics program at the University is esteemed globally, showcasing a robust international perspective that mirrors New Zealand’s distinctive role in the Asia–Pacific region. Our alumni have pursued careers in teaching English and have taken on educational leadership positions both in New Zealand and internationally.
