Course description

This program will enhance your critical understanding of research-based teaching methods, learning theory, inquiry skills, and content knowledge, enabling you to effectively teach diverse learners in New Zealand schools.

You will gain valuable practical experience through 80 days in the classroom, across two different schools, supported by Te Kura Toi Tangata School of Education lecturers and Mentor Teachers.

The curriculum includes eleven 500-level postgraduate papers (180 points) covering topics such as teaching within the New Zealand context, evidence-based inquiry, teaching diverse learners, and curriculum design and implementation. The Master of Teaching and Learning is an intensive program for high achievers, with more stringent entry requirements compared to the Graduate Diploma in Teaching.

Please note: This program builds upon the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching with an additional 30-point paper.

Entry requirements

To be eligible for this program, candidates must possess a Bachelor’s Degree at level 7 on the NZ Qualifications Framework or an equivalent qualification, with a minimum B/B+ average.

Applications for Teacher Education open annually on 1 July. Early application is recommended, as all candidates will undergo an interview and selection process. Selection criteria include academic performance, communication skills, personal attributes, background experiences, and a literacy and numeracy assessment. Applicants must also meet the University’s admission requirements.

For those applying to the Master of Teaching and Learning (Secondary), candidates must demonstrate substantial knowledge in relevant subjects or curriculum from Levels 5 to 7 or higher in their undergraduate degree. This is crucial for teaching specific secondary school subjects. Degree transcripts must be submitted with your application. The program leader/coordinator will provide guidance on the appropriate program during the interview stage.
