Bachelor of Social Work

This course is for dedicated social justice advocates who want to uplift individuals, families, whānau, and communities. Students will develop skills in support and advocacy.

Course description

This comprehensive four-year program merges theoretical education with experiential learning. Participants will develop a robust foundation of knowledge, skills, and attributes essential for engaging in diverse social work domains and environments, including schools, hospitals, community organizations, and governmental bodies. The Bachelor of Social Work program prepares graduates to enter the workforce as beginning practitioners, eligible for provisional registration with the Social Workers Registration Board. Students can take advantage of our flexible course delivery system. Short on-campus sessions in Hamilton are integrated with online coursework that can be completed from home in their local communities.

Wintec adopts a blended delivery model for its Bachelor of Social Work programs. Full-time study requirements are set at 30 to 35 hours per week, which includes a combination of in-person classes, online instruction, directed online activities, and video conferencing through platforms like Zoom.

Certain occupations require registration by law in New Zealand. This programme leads to registration with Social Worker registration board.

Entry requirements

Students are required to have:

​NCEA Level 3 comprised of 60 credits at NCEA Level 3 or higher and 20 credits at NCEA Level 2 or higher, including:
14 credits each at NCEA Level 3 in three approved subjects; and
Literacy (10 credits at NCEA Level 2 or above made up of 5 credits each in reading and writing); and
Numeracy (10 credits at NCEA Level 1 or above made up of specified achievement standards or a package of three specified unit standards); or
A relevant qualification at Level 4 on the NZQF; OR

Equivalent.

English Language requirement:

Students who have English as an additional language are required to have an International English Language Test System (IELTS) academic score of 6.5 across all components; or equivalent.
