The MNSc (Pre-reg) pathway provides individuals with a health-related degree an efficient and accelerated route to entering the nursing field.

Course description

The Master of Nursing Science (Pre-registration) (MNSc (Pre-reg)) program spans four semesters over a two-year period. This program offers students with a health-related degree a direct and expedited pathway to a nursing career. Upon successful completion, graduates will receive a Master of Nursing Science (Pre-registration) and will be eligible to apply to the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) to take the State Final Examination, thereby qualifying as registered nurses.

The program is specifically designed for graduates aspiring to enter the nursing profession. It is anticipated that the inclusion of students from diverse health-related backgrounds will enrich the learning environment and promote values of manākitanga and whakawhanaungatanga. The curriculum incorporates integrated clinical experiences that foster practical skills, with a focus on cultivating culturally responsive, work-ready nurses who are adept at collaborating across disciplines to address the healthcare needs of Māori, Pacific, rural, and remote communities, as well as their families.

Occupational Registration

Certain occupations require registration by law in New Zealand. This programme leads to registration with Nursing Council of New Zealand.

Career Prospects

Upon completion of this program, graduates will have the opportunity to apply to the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) to participate in the State Final Examination and achieve registration in the registered nurse scope of practice. They will be culturally responsive and ready to enter the workforce as competent nurses, capable of interprofessional collaboration and functioning in various nursing roles, including clinical, leadership, education, and research.

Graduates will be equipped to address the health care needs of Māori, Pacific, rural, and remote health consumers, whānau, and communities, all within the bicultural setting of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Entry requirements

Academic requirements: Students are required to have:

-A recognised bachelor’s degree with a minimum 65% in the third year of their qualifying degree; which is considered relevant to health science or appropriate health or allied professional qualification.

English Language requirement

-Students who have English as a second language are required to have an International English Language Test System (IELTS) score of 7.0 with no individual band score lower than 7.0; or equivalent
