A bachelor’s degree with a B+ grade average or higher in level 7 courses is preferred, but not mandatory. While a degree in education is not required, having studied education courses at the undergraduate level can be beneficial.
Previous teaching experience is not a must, but familiarity with working with children aged 0-5 or 5-12 is important to demonstrate suitability for the profession.
Applicants must adhere to the compliance steps set by the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand, which include completing an Initial Teacher Education (ITE) Programme entry form, passing literacy and numeracy assessments, meeting English language competency requirements, undergoing an interview to assess teaching suitability, meeting the “good character and fitness” criteria, obtaining police vetting, providing satisfactory references, and fulfilling safety check requirements as per the Children’s Act 2014.
Applicants will receive detailed information about these compliance steps from the School of Education staff. The entire process may take up to 6 weeks due to the time required for some of the compliance steps. Applicants are advised to consider this timeframe when submitting their applications.
