About

Auckland University of Technology, known as AUT, is a prominent university in New Zealand. Established on January 1, 2000, it originated from a technical college founded in 1895. AUT boasts a student population of just over 30,000 spread across its three campuses in Auckland, making it the country’s third-largest university. It is a popular choice for international students, originating from around 100 different countries. With five faculties and three campuses, with also AUT Millennium, Warkworth Radio Astronomical Observatory, and AUT Centre for Refugee Education, AUT offers a diverse range of educational opportunities.

AUT provides a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, including doctoral and Master’s degrees, as well as diplomas and certificates. They offer programs in various fields such as applied sciences, art and design, business, communication studies, education, engineering, health care, hospitality, languages, law, mathematics, nursing, psychology, public health, social science, and sport. The AUT Business School has been acknowledged as a top business school globally by AACSB International.

Faculties and schools

These faculties include 16 schools, namely Art and Design, Business, Clinical Sciences, Communication Studies, Economics, Education, Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences. Future Environments, Hospitality and Tourism, Language and Culture, Law, Public Health and Interdisciplinary Studies, Science, Social Sciences and Public Policy, Sport and Recreation, Te Ara Poutama – Māori and Indigenous Development.

Rankings and reputation

In the 2024 QS World University Rankings, AUT secured the 412th spot, solidifying its place in the top 2% of universities globally. According to the 2017 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking, AUT was recognised as one of the top 20 universities worldwide for International Outlook, thanks to its significant number of international staff, students, and research collaborations. Additionally, AUT was listed among the top 60 young universities in the world and made its debut in THE’s top 150 universities under 50 years old.

Campuses

AUT has three campuses: City (in Auckland CBD), North and South, and the training institute, Millennium. City and North campuses offer student accommodation and AUT runs a shuttle bus service between the city campus and south campus.

Auckland City Campus is spread across multiple sites in central Auckland. The main site on Wellesley Street East houses academic units, administration offices, and research centers. Various faculties share this location, including Business, Economics, Law, Design, Creative Technologies, Culture, and Society. The campus offers a range of facilities such as an early childhood center, gym, library, student support services, and training restaurants. Recent additions include the WZ building for engineering, computer science, and mathematics students, designed with a focus on sustainability and interactive learning. Another new addition is the WG precinct, featuring the Sir Paul Reeves Building.

AUT South Campus is the first university campus in the region, offering a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. It has its own library, student lounges, and sports facilities. The Mana Hauora Building, opened in 2017, is the largest building on campus and has won awards for its sustainability design features.

North campus is home to the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences, the School of Education, and the Sport and Recreation division. The campus has beautiful park-like grounds and houses AUT’s main sport and fitness center, which includes a gym, weights room, testing equipment, golf swing clinic, and indoor courts. Additionally, there are various facilities available on campus such as a library, student services center, early childhood center, AuSM branch, PrintSprint shop, health counselling and wellbeing center, university bookshop, and food outlets. The campus also hosts five health clinics (oral, physiotherapy, podiatry, psychotherapy, and ultrasound) at the NorthMed Health Clinic. North campus has a close connection with the AUT Millennium Institute of Sport and Health.

AUT Millennium, situated in Mairangi Bay on Auckland’s North Shore, is a hub for sports training and various national and local sports organizations. It offers training facilities, athlete accommodation, sports science labs, an aquatics facility, and a commercial gym. Some of the organizations hosted there include Swimming New Zealand, New Zealand Water Polo, Northsport Olympic Weightlifting, and Sport and Recreation New Zealand.

AUT also maintains a number of facilities off campus. The Warkworth Radio Astronomical Observatory is home to the AUT Radio Telescope, New Zealand’s first radio telescope. It is part of the Square Kilometre Array project, a collaboration between New Zealand and Australia. AUT/New Zealand Alliance received a ‘Highly Commended’ award at the 2016 New Zealand Innovation Awards for their involvement in this project. The AUT Centre for Refugee Education in Māngere offers a six-week education program for refugees arriving in New Zealand under the government quota scheme. The program covers English language skills at different levels and provides orientation to life in New Zealand. The teaching team adapts the curriculum to meet the needs of each new group of learners, who arrive every two months.
