
Victoria University of Wellington (Māori: Te Herenga Waka) is a public research university located in Wellington, New Zealand. Established in 1897 through an Act of Parliament, it was originally a constituent college of the University of New Zealand.
The university is renowned for its programs in law, the humanities, and various scientific disciplines, while also offering a wide range of other courses. While first-year courses are open to all students, admission to the second year in certain programs, such as law, criminology, creative writing, architecture, and engineering, is competitive and restricted.
Victoria University achieved the highest average research grade in the New Zealand Government’s Performance Based Research Fund exercises in both 2012 and 2018, after being ranked 4th in 2006 and 3rd in 2003. Additionally, it was ranked 215th among the world’s top 500 universities by the QS World University Rankings in 2020.
