New Zealand ITPs

New Zealand's Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs) are educational institutions focused on vocational education and training. In April 2020, these institutions were unified into a single entity known as Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology to better align educational programs with the needs of students, employers, and communities across New Zealand.

However this merger is being dissolved as of 2024, returning the original 16 ITPs to their own leadership.

Ara Institute of Canterbury

Located in Christchurch, it offered a wide range of programs from certificates to degrees, particularly in trades, health, and creative industries.

Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT)

With campuses in Hawke's Bay, Tairāwhiti (Gisborne), and Auckland, EIT provided programs in business, primary industries, health, and trades.

Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT)

Based in Auckland, MIT was known for its strong industry connections and practical, hands-on learning across various fields.

Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT)

Located in Nelson and Marlborough, NMIT focused on marine studies, aviation, aquaculture, and viticulture.

NorthTec

Serving the Northland region, NorthTec offered a range of programs with a particular emphasis on Māori culture and community engagement.

Open Polytechnic

As New Zealand's leading distance learning provider, it specialized in online and flexible learning options for a diverse range of subjects.

Otago Polytechnic

Based in Dunedin, it was known for its innovative programs and strong emphasis on sustainability and the creative arts.

Southern Institute of Technology (SIT)

Located in Invercargill, SIT offered a Zero Fees Scheme and programs in trades, business, and health sciences.

Tai Poutini Polytechnic

Based on the West Coast, it provided niche programs in areas like jade carving, outdoor education, and emergency management.

Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology

Formed from a merger of Bay of Plenty Polytechnic and Waiariki Institute of Technology, it served the central North Island region with a wide range of programs.

Unitec Institute of Technology

One of the largest ITPs, located in Auckland, offering programs in architecture, performing arts, and engineering.

Universal College of Learning (UCOL)

With campuses in Palmerston North, Whanganui, and Wairarapa, UCOL provided programs in nursing, trades, and creative industries.

Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec)

Located in Hamilton, Wintec focused on applied learning in health, sport science, media arts, and trades.

Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki (WITT)

Based in New Plymouth, WITT offered programs in engineering, health, and hospitality.

Whitireia New Zealand

With campuses in Porirua, Wellington, and Auckland, Whitireia provided programs in nursing, performing arts, and business.

Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec)

Located in Wellington, WelTec specialized in engineering, information technology, and creative technologies.
